At Toro Rosso, Gerhard Berger was Sebastian Vettel’s team boss, and after his first win in Monza in 2008 he was on the podium together with the German. Berger is now head of the DTM and has to deal with the Audi exit. Vettel, on the other hand, is looking for a new job. That fits, Berger believes.

The Austrian says to F1-Insider.com half jokingly, half seriously: “For him there can only be the DTM. But seriously: why not? He still drives at the highest level. So he can compete with other great drivers with racing cars he likes. In Formula 1, he no longer has any major alternatives. He wants to drive in a top team, there is only Mercedes as a possibility. But there, too, I’m afraid the seats are taken.”

Overall, Berger protects his former pupil from too much red criticism.

“You saw it coming,” said Berger about the separation of the German from Ferrari. “Vettel doesn’t have to blame himself. He joins many pilots who have failed to get Ferrari back on the winning road. Gerhard Berger was one of them.”

Berger admits: “Only Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher managed to do this on a permanent basis. But Sebastian Vettel as a four-time world champion will easily be able to cope with this. There are very few who have been so successful.”
